.

II. DESIGNS AND COST ESTIMATING

A. Discussion of Lower Gunnison Basin unit (LGBU)
Authorized Plan
"~
c.~ The LGBU as described in the FR/FEIS was authorized by
t~ Congress in October 1984 in PL 98-569. The following is a
~. discussion of canal and lateral designs presented in the FR/FEIS
and the need for design revisions and modifications which were
identified during the SO/JU study.

.

.

-1. FR/FEIS Canal Desians

The deferred increments (i.e. the five canal/lateral
systems) of the Congressionally authorized plan for the LGBU
would have rehabilitated all of the canals and laterals on the
east side of the Uncompahgre River. The program involved lining
all the canals and laterals with 2 or 3-inch-thick unrein forced
concrete. The canals were designed to include the following:

a. Cattle guards and stock fencing along both sides of
the canals.

b. Safety ladders placed at 750 foot intervals.

c. Deer escape ladders were to be installed as needed.

d. Upgraded cross-drainage facilities designed to pass
the 50-year flood.

e. Interceptor ditches and detention dams

f. Improvements to the existing drain system.

g. Constant-head orifice (CHO) type turnouts.

2. FR/FEIS Lateral Desians

Detailed designs for concrete lining the laterals under the
Selig Canal were completed in the LGBU FR/FEIS. Designs and
estimates for the Ironstone Canal Laterals were used to prorate
the costs for the remaining lateral systems. A 2.5-inch-thick
un'reinforced concrete lined system was planned to serve the
existing delivery points along the existing lateral alignments.
The designs included the following:

a. Fencing on both sides with ladders installed at
750-foot intervals on all lateral reaches with concrete
lining heights greater than 30 inches.

5
