.

.-.
en
CJl
.t:--

.

.

V, Garnet Canal - H Svstem

The Garnet Canal conveys irrigation water from the Garnet Canal
Diversion on the Uncompahgre River about 6 miles southeast of Delta, in a
northerly direction a distance of 10,1 miles, serving lands on the east side
of Uncompahgre Valley. The canal serves 1,590 acres of land. The proposed
capacity of the canal would range from 90 to 55 cfs,

A. Geology and Construction Materials

The canal flows generally north through and area with Mancos Shale
bedrock, In the first 2 miles of the alignment, the canal flows through as
area of flood plain deposits of the Uncompahgre River, In the next few miles
of the alignment, the canal alternately crosses areas of tin residual soils
'over shale and areas of deeper alluvium deposited by two small washes. This
alluvium is up to 13 feet deep and is a lean clay, In the next part of the
alignment, the canal flows along the base of a shale hill just above Sweitzer
Lake, In this area, the lower canal bank is composed almost entirely of
embankment materials. In the remaining part of the alignment, the canal is on
a terrace deposit of the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers. The canal section
'is in alluvium in this part of the alignment.

Borrow materials for compacted embankment for the Garnet Canal could
come from pediment gravel and terrace gravel deposits. These deposits are
silty gravels, with terrace gravels containing less fines than the pediment
gravels, Up to 20 percent plus 3-inch sizes were estimated to be present in
these deposits,

B, Canal Lining

The entire 10,1 mile length of H canal will be put in PVC membrane
lining, Canal capacities are as follows:

Canal Capacities
by reaches

Capaci ty Length
(cfs) (feet)
90 35,700
80 1,380
75 1,340
65 4,880
60 4,750
55 5,230

35
