LAND OWNERSHIP

The Los Pinos River and its tributaries which have been proposed for

inclusion into the Wild and Scenic River System total approximately 43 linear

miles of stream. The entire stream system under consideration is public domain

and is administered by the National Forest Service. Approximately 94% of the

stream system under consideration lies within the San Juan primitive area. The

remaining 6% of the stream section lies between the southern boundary of the

San Juan primitive area and the northern boundary of the Granite Peak Ranch.

This stream section is national forest land and is included in the proposed

Weminuche Wilderness Area currently under study by the U.S. Congress. If the

boundaries of Weminuche suggested by the National Forest Service are approved,

another 1.5 miles of river now located within the Granite Peak Ranch will be

purchased by the federal government.

LAND USE

According to Colorado's Statu~s of Public Domain maps there are no grazing

permits or mining patents located within the proposed study area at this time.

Both grazing and mining are permitted within a Wild and Scenic River Area, however,

they must be conducted in accord with the provisions of the Act. The Secretary

of the agency responsible for administration may issue regulations to provide

safeguards against pollution and unnecessary impairment of the scenery.
