In 1990, the company purchased the former Big R building
in Fort Morgan and opened Imperial Onion of Colorado, Inc. In
its beginning, Imperial Onion employed 30 people and processes
500,000 50 pound bags a year. Each year since then, packaging,
shipping and storing of yellow, white, and red onions begins in
August and continues until March of the next year. Approximately
five semi-truck loads of onions are shipped out of the facility
every day, five days a week. In 1993, the company expanded its
17,500 square foot building by adding an additional 6,500 square
feet as well as adding new equipment that could handle the onions
more efficiently. At the time of the expansion, Imperial Onion
employed 40, but was considering hiring an additional 10 for a
total of 50 jobs. In 1992, they shipped 525,000 50 pound bags
which amounts to 600 semi loads a year. Robert Harris, owner of
Imperial Onion, mentioned that the longer growing season for
onions, the good transportation network, and the expertise of the
farmers in the Fort Morgan area were the draw for the company to
locate here four years ago.

".
