C..J
0:
C""'::
--

Initial Development

c.

AE: theadaI'tation of the La Plata River Compact no govern oper-
ation of tho storago'rcsorvoirs proposod at Long Holl~ and Stato
Line sitos, as we.1l, as the negotiations for construction of State Line
ReserVoir, may require some time, consideration has been given to the
o onstruc ti on of Long Hollow Reservoir as an initial unit.

Under tho compact, which limits New Mexico to beneficial use at
all timils, the Colorado aroa could retain for storage and use in that
state all, flow at tho state line occurring betweon December 1 and
Fobruary 15, follOWing, and s'Uch portions of the flow during tho i1:':Il'i-
gation season as could not be beneficially used in New Mexico,.
Actually, irrigation use is negligible from December 1 to March 31-;.
Construction of a reservoir with 12,000 acre-feet of irriga'tion capa-
city at Long Hollow site in Colorado would enable retention of con-
siderable amounts of water, thereby materially improving the supply
to Colorado lands both as to quantity and distribution.

Because of compact observance, the supply to Colorado would be
less than under the final (twowreservoir) plan. AE in the final plan,
one of the greatest benefits of the initial development would be the
improvement in service, resulting from storage of early season water
(prosent excess diversions) to improve distribution through the later
months of the season.,

The annual water supplies to Colorado, pOSSible under the initial'
development with only Long Hollow Reservoir constructed, are compared
with past diversions in the following tabulation) and the monthly
values, including regulation of decreed water, are shown graphically
on drawing 56-D-324.

\

'r

25
