..-.l

~
......
, .

station consists of Hesporus flow, tributary inflow, and roturn flow,
all diminished by Colorado irrigation uses.

--

c

Annual run-off at the state Line has averaged 29,000 acre-feet
since 1921, varying from a minimum of 8,400 in 1934, to 69,700 in 1941.

During the irrigation period of April to October, La Plata River
flow deviates widely from monthly irrigation requirements, as shown in
the following tabulation:

Distribution of Run-off, La Plata Rivor
at Colorado-New Mexico State Line

Total

Average run-off, Ideal
1921 to 1940, inclusive irrigation
demand
Acre-fest Percent Percent
.'
.
7,400 . 33 6
.
7,300 32 13
3,100 14 27
1,200 5 23
900 4 2l
1,100 5 7
. 1,500 7 3
.
:
22,500 100 . 100

Month

April
May
June
July
August
September
October

operation - New Mexico Division

Under pressnt conditions the New Mexico ditch diversions con-
form to the erratic flows of La Plata River arriving at the 5tate Line.
After May the river flow declines rapidly, almost to negligible
quantities.

The 'function of State Line Reservoir is to store winter run-off
and seasonal flows of La Plata River with outflow regulation in accord-
ance wi1lh irrigation needs. Since the irrigation capacity of 12,000
acre-feet is inadequate for both seasonal regulation and yearly carry-
over storage,' . complete regulation of water available to
New Mexic 0 usors cannot boo prOVided. Peak flows of high-water years
like 1920, 1927, and 1941 would continue to pass unused to San Juan
River.

State Line Reservoir would furnish seasonal amounts of water,
regulated in accordance with crop needs, for 3,800 acres, as shown in
table 1. and on the operation graph (drawing No. 56-D"'323) covering
the 13-year analytical study of 1928-1940 (with Long Hollow Reservoir,
of l2,OOO acre"'foot capacity, assumed to be in operation for the
Colorado area without Colorado encroachment on the New Moxico Inter-
state Compact allocation).

24
