In <br />agriculture, earnings per employee in the region ex- <br />ceeded Ihose for the Nation in 1940, 1950, and 1960, <br />but to a lesser extent in 1960. In manufacturing, <br />earnings per employee were somewhat less in the region <br />than the Nation throughout the 20-year period. This <br />difference increased between 1950 and 1960 and was <br />approximateiy $600 below that for the Nation in 1960_ <br />Earnings per employee for the region, the individual <br />subregions, and] 1 SMSA's 3S J percent of the national <br />average are shown in table 7. <br />In 1940 only two subregions. the Upper Missouri and <br />the Yellowstone. were above the national average. By <br />1950 earnings per employee in the Upper Missouri <br />Subregion were about 25 percent above the national <br />average, while the Yellowstone was joined by the <br />Platte-Niobrara and the Middle Missouri in exceeding the <br />national figure. For 1960, none of the subregions <br />equaled the Nation for average earnings per employee. In <br />1940 earnings per employee in the Kansas Subregion <br />were lowest ill the region l)f about two.thirds of the <br />n at ional average.
