After 1960 the
growth would probably continue at a lesser rate so that by the year 2000
a population of 3,000 within the city limits and 1,500 outside would be
dependent on the municipal system. An average requirement of 330 gallons
daily for each person, including incidental industrial use, would amount
to 1.5 million gallons a day by year 2000. This would be 1,600 acre-
feet annually which is twice the estimated amount presently used.
Present facilities are capable of supplying this quantity of water.

,
<

If current operation by the Bureau of Mine s of a demonstration
plant nijar Rifle for the recovery of oil from shale should develop
into a corrmercial enterprise, a substantial increase in population
undoubtedly would result. In this event a reappraisal of the munici-
pal water situation would be necessary.

Potential Development of Project Water

The Silt project has been considered as a source of municipal
water in the event that a recpirement for a substantial increase in
the present supply is recognized before the project is constructed.
In addition to providing irrigation water as planned, the project could

46
