Project Description. <br /> <br />A. Locstion and Purpose. The Trinidad Lake Project is located <br /> <br />in Las Animas County in southcentral Colorado near the Colorado- <br /> <br />New Mexico border. As a major feature of the project, Trinidad Dam <br /> <br />is presently being constructed across the Purgatoire River, approxi- <br /> <br />mately 4 miles southwest of the city of Trinidad (note Project Map). <br /> <br />When completed, the dam and resulting lake will be multipurpose <br /> <br />developments functioning for flood control, irrigation storage and <br /> <br />regulation, sediment retention, snd, with the acquisition of water <br /> <br />for the maintenance of a permanent pool, enhanced recreation and <br /> <br />fish and wildlife resources. The dam, as operated for flood control, <br /> <br />will regulate all but infrequent large-magnitude floods to non-damaging <br /> <br />flows of 5,000 cubic-feet- per-second at the city of Trinidad and reduce <br /> <br />flood peaks as far down as the mouth of the Purgatoire River. <br /> <br />B. Congressional authority for construe. <br /> <br />tion of the Trinidad Lake Project is contained in the Flood Control <br /> <br />Act of 1958, Public Law 85-500, 85th Congress. The Trinidad Lake <br /> <br />project is a modification of an earlier authorized floodway plan <br /> <br />that would have provided local flood protection for Trinidad (authorized <br /> <br />22 December, 1944 by Public Law 534, 78th Congress, 2nd Session) by <br /> <br />means of levees and channel works.
