OC1511

utilizing some of this vegetal waste for wildlife cover. As stated, ~
grassing and tree plantings will be accomplished to re-establish Some

vegetation lost to project construction.

5. Landscape Alteration. When the Trinidad Lake Project

is completed, a permanent change in the description of the general

area will have transpired. This section of the valley, previously

characterized by several old, small mining communities, and a stream

bordered by small patches of cultivated and pasture land, will be

substituted with a dam and a quiescent body of water. The presence

of the embankment and appurtenant facilities, and recreational

development will alter the physiographic description of the area.
Approximately 2,500 acres of land, including about 5 miles of stream,

will be inundated to varying degrees and periods throughout the life

of the project. While many of the borrow areas will be covered with

water, there are some small areas that will be above water line all
or a majority of the time. These areas are located near the mouth

of Long Canyon, the terraces on the south side of the reservoir,

and the upper reaches of the reservoir area.

6. Archeological and Historical Resources. The major impact

that the Trinidad Lake Project has had on the field of archeology is
the acquisition of privately owned land which has permitted the salvage
of many significant sites previously denied study by land owners. A
majority of significant archeological resources within project

boundaries have been salvaged and the knowledge and artifacts gained

from these studies recorded and preserved. However, the completed

excavation of two archeological sites is yet unresolved despite

I~9

.
