O~15C8

.

economy of the Trinidad area. This improvement of the agricultural

economy should aid in improving and stabilizing the economy of

Trinidad and its environs. Results of the Bureau of Reclamstion's

advanced planning studies show that a conservation pool of 20,000

acre-feet plus the use of the unsedimented portion of the joint

use pool (estimated to average 19,500 acre-feet for the 75-year
payout period) will provide optimum regulation for the irrigation
water. Benefits resulting from the water supply improvement will
amount to $270,440 annually.
In past operations, the irrigation water supplies for the area

as a whole have been inadequate and ill-distributed, the average

annual quantity amounting to 61.0 percent of the total requirement

and late season supplies being consistently unavailable. Construc-

tion of the project and restricting deliveries to irrigable lands

only (19,717 acres) will increase the annual average supply to
83.0 percent of the total requirement. Irrigation flows in excess

of requirements and most winter flows will become storable under the

Model decree in Trinidad Lake. In effect, the reservoir will store

that portion of the historic diversion in excess of the actual require-

ments. This quantity is greater by 13,800 acre-feet per year than

that used effici~ntly in historic operations.
The flood protection afforded by the dam will permit the improve-
ment and modernization of irrigation systems heretofore prevented by

unregulated flows. In anticipation of an improved water supply,

improvements to existing water distribution systems have already

begun.

.

I~3
