0=1499

~ structures have been excavated from TC:9:8-12 of which reports

(1970, 1973) on two of these sites have been submitted to the National

Park Service with the third to be submitted in the near future.

Additional habitation structures are to be excavated. Six Sopris

Phase habitation structures habe been excavated at TC:C9:20 and there

are indications that snother house structure is present. Most of

this- work has been reported by Caryl Wood and Stephen Ireland (1973)

with an additional report to be completed and submitted in the near

future. Site TC:C9:144, containing a Sopris Phase house, has been

completely excavated with no additional field work required. A

report on the results of this study will be submitted to the National

Park Service within the next few months. The Park Service does not

have the necessary additional funds for this excavation wolk, other

projects having higher priorities. Also the Park Service maintains

that a reordering of priorities to include this salvage work cannot

be "justified at the present time." By law, the Corps cannot fund

salvage activities. These sites are being protected with the hope

that this matter can be resolved.

Mr. Ireland has listed three sites in close proximity to, but
outside project lands, as worthy of historical importance and has
taken the preliminary steps to have them included in the National
Registry of Historic Places. These sites are: the Cokedale coke

ovens, a Penitente morada, and the northern boundary of the Beaubien

.

and Miranda (Maxwell) Grant.

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preserva-

tion Act of 1966, the National Register of Historic Places as well

II -25

,
