Park Service, Trinidad State Junior College - Department of Anthropology,
and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers concerning the presence and salvage
of archeological and historical sites in the project area. Over the
past 12 years the Park Service has provided $53,439 for salvage of
these resources. Nearly 50 percent of the known sites in the project
area have been sampled, making the Trinidad Lake Project one of the
most thoroughly investigated of its kind. The Park Service has
maintained a rather extensive and long-term commitment to the project

and states that "the Service has met its commitment to salvage the

cultural remains within the reservoir area." Results of completed

salvage operations, studies, and interpretation are contained in

reports entitled: Purgatoire River Reservoir Salvage Archaeology,

1969: Sites TC:C9:4 and TC:C9:9; Trinidad Reservoir Salvage Archaeology,

1970. Stephen Ireland, Department

of Anthropology, Trinidad State Junior College under contract with the

National Park Service.

There are three sites within the reservoir area, two of which

Mr. Ireland feels warrant additional salvage work. These sites are

numbers TC:C9:8-l2, TC:C9:20, and TC:c9:l44. The sites contain

(contained) late prehistoric, southwestern habitation structures

and culturally are in the Sopris Phase (A.D. 1150 to 1250 or 1300)

of the Upper Purgatoire Complex (A.D. 1000-1300).
