0:1476

.

3. Spillway. The spillway will be located on the left
abutment at the northern end of the embankment. It will be a 1,000-
foot wide, rock cut, uncontrolled gravity structure containing a
centrally-located 40-foot wide notched service spillway. The service
spillway will control the project design flood to a flow of 15,000
c.f.s. at Trinidad. The combined design discharge for both emergency
and service spillways is 240,000 c.f.s. Discharges will be conveyed
through a natural arroyo and an excavated channel to the Purgatoire
River located about 800 feet downstream from the dam.
F. Stora~e Allocation.
1. Permaneat pool. The authorized project did not provide
permanent storage for fish and wildlife and recreation. It did
contain, however, the reservation that this would not preclude its

future consideration if water were made available for such use.

During design studies, the State of Colorado requested an allocation

of 4,500 acre-feet of .torage for public u.e purpose. and indicated

that the State would acquire the nece.sary water right.. Con.equently,

.torage capacity for public use was included in the project. The

Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation has requested

~150.000 from the State legislature for 4,500 acre-feet of water for

the initial filling of the pool and water rights to replace approxi-

mately 500 acre-feet of evaporation loss. In addition, those water

rights obtained by the Corps through land acquisition may be turned

over to the State and converted to storage rights at the reservoir.

2. IrriRation and sediment. Water rights for a 20,OOO.acre-

foot irrigation pool will be provided by transfer of the storage

.

1-5
