Many of

the soils are rock free with the exception of the cobble aquifer and

soils near the Book cliffs which often contain sandstone fragments.

Potential problems to be considered during preconstruct ion studies

of the canals and laterals include the expansive potential of the

soils and shale, high ground water table areas, soft saturated soils,

frost susceptible soils, and soil materials with a high salt content.

The exploration program to gather final design data will be planned to

address these potential problems.

Construction materials

Various types of earth materials would be required for lining of the

canals and laterals including fine-grained soils to reshape the prisms

prior to lining placement, embankment for detention ditches and dams,

gravel for surfacing operation and maintenance roads, and aggregate for

concrete structures and concrete lining.

The volume of each type of

material needed would vary greatly, with the fine-grained soils necessary

to reshape the canals totaling by far the greatest amount.

Field reconnaissance of material sites has been conducted to locate

large volumes of soils to refill and reshape the canals and laterals

prior to placement of the concrete lining.

The exploration was essen-

tially limited to north of the Government Highline Canal because the

lands south of this canal are either irrigated croplands or homesteads,

or are otherwise intensely developed.

Ten sites containing large

volumes of fine-grained soils classified as sandy silts, silty sands, and

44
