future demands in the study area. Tab 1 e S.l ident i fi es the components that
were evaluated and the results of screening them.

-:l
.-
c:>
N
<:0

Recreation enhancement opportunities were discussed previously in Task
Memorandum No.4. The opportunities identified therein were reviewed to
ident i fy the items that woul d contri bute toward meeting the study target
objectives. That group of components was screened to develop a list of
recreation components recommended for inclusion in alternative plans. That
list is presented in Table S.2.

Since no M&I shortages were identified in the study area, no components
were considered for the sole purpose of meeting future M&I needs. It is
recognized however that the City of Gunnison may desire to convert from its
present groundwater system to a surface water system wi th storage in the
future. That was taken into consideration when identifying storage reservoirs
to meet other purposes by locating them to be able to serve that purpose from
a physical and hydrologic standpoint.

i~:;:;~ Two types of structural components were investigated to meet future
agricultural demands; conveyance systems to transfer water from one sub-basin
to another and storage reservoirs. The conveyance systems were determined to
be economically infeasible and it was determined that storage reservoirs
provided the only pract i cal means of meeting projected future agricultural
water demands. A total of 57 potential reservoir sites were identified in the
seven sub-basi ns ident ifi ed as havi ng i rri gat i on shortages. A prel imi nary
screening of these 57 sites resulted in retaining seven alternative sites
located in three different sub-basins. Four of the seven sub-basins were
el iminated from further consideration because the shortages in these
sub-basi ns are very sma 11 in magnitude and the structural measures i dent ifi ed
to satisfy the shortages were found to be extremely expensive. The components
and sub-basins retained for further study are shown in Table S.3 and Figure
S.l in the main body of the report.

S-3
