.

.

CRWOCB's Public Notice

Last November, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board-Colorado River Basin
Region (CRWQCB) issued a public notice that it planned to begin the review process in January
1999 for its Water Quality Control Plan for the Colorado River Basin. Included in this month's
Board folder is the CR WQCB' s notice that it will be holding a public workshop in Palm Desert, on
January 27" to solicit public input on its plan. Below is the tentative list of issues under
consideration for review/update:

. Guidelines for Sewage Disposal from Land Developments

. Water Quality Objectives for Nitrates and Total Dissolved Solids (mS)

. Water Recycling

. Beneficial Use Designation of Aquifers

. The Impact of Geothermal Fluids on Surface and Groundwater Quality

. Evaluation of Beneficial Uses of Water bodies in Imperial Valley

Atlas Uranium Mine Tailinl!s

At last month's Board meeting there was a discussion related to the mill tailings that have
been deposited along the River from operations of the Atlas Mineral Corporation, which processed
uranium there during the Cold War. The Board requested that a letter be forwarded to the
appropriate federal agencies and that representatives from those agencies meet with the Board and
discuss the actions they are proposing to take to remedy the leaching of toxic material into the River.

Staffhas contacted the Executive Director of the Colorado River Salinity Control Forum and
representatives of the MWD to gather background information for use in preparing the letter. A draft
copy of the letter will be circulated for review prior to issuance.

,

_.4u.~~._.. -~.J -r./

~ Gerald R.
