t,) Plant Features
o
~ . Product water is collected from each stage individually and combined with
e.o untreated drainage water in a concrete channel and conveyed to the Colorado River.
The process recovers 70 percent of the feed water with the remaining 30 percent
being discharged as a brine, The rejected brine flows to an energy recovery
system, with hydraulic pelton wheels directly coupled to three high-pressure feed
pumps and motors. This system will save approximately 24 million kilowatt-hours
per year-approximately 16 percent of the pumping power required for desalting,
From there the concentrate water is piped to the concrete-lined bypass drain where
it is combined with excess untreated Wellton-Mohawk drainage and then flows
through Mexico to the Santa Clara Slough at the Gulf of Califomia.

Office and control room areas are located in the two-story section of the desalting
building. Special areas are provided for electronic and computer equipment, as well
as control room and associated operator areas.

A subject of special concern is the no-load condition which is expected to result
from high riverflow conditions. Operation of the plant will be dependent upon the
hydrology of the Colorado River. There are expected periods of time when it will
be unnecessary to operate the plant or periods when the plant may be operated at
reduced capacity. During outages the membranes will be cooled with chilled water
containing a biocide.

Test Plant, a Research & Development Facility

A small but important feature of the plant is the Test Plant. This test system affords
potential for advancements in both pretreatment and desalting technology, plus the
ability to maintain a program of continuous technology assessment for operations
and equipment replacement. The Test Plant also provides,a vehic1e, for operator
training.

The l-million-gallons-per-day pretreatment system has one SCR and a 4-cell dual
media filter system. The Test Plant desalting building houses Test Desalting Units
as well as providing space for future test writs. Extensive testing at the Test Plant
pretreatment systems will,dellelop:

. operating standards for equipment,

. operating limits.

These initial tests have been utilized to optimize:

. the solid contact reactor lime slurry and ferric sulfate dosage rates,

. sludge distribution in the mixing zone,

4
