,.

.

.

.'

toeal Interest

There is no known existing irrigation along Red River below
Denison Dam, although physioal opportunities for development of river bank
pumping systems exist at various points. Water supply is available; suitablE
lands lie adjaoent to the river; and pumping lifts would be tolerable,
varying from 30 to 50 feet.

Returns from present cropping practices apparently do not justifY
irrigation development. No inquiry has been made as to the looal interest
toward irrigation development by groups of individuals.

Conclusions

Irrigation development by individuals or by small groups of indi~
viduals would seem most appropriate for this area. Specialized cropping
practices such as vegetable, berry, or fruit farming might return enough to
make irrigation profitable.

Considerable care should be taken in Choosing open-textured,
light soils for irrigable areas as the concentration of sodium in the river
approaches that point at questionable use on heavy soils.

Priority of Development

Irrigation from sewage disposal effluent at Amarillo and LUbbock,
Texas is part of the plan of development of water resources of the Canadian
River, and its development should have first priority over other considered
irrigation in the Canadian and Red River Basins, in event the Canadian
River Project is constructed.

Development of irrigation on alluvial lands below Denison Dam
by individuals should be encouraged where practicable through the usa of
river bank pumping plants and specialized cropping practices.

Development of irrigation at the McKnight Project on Salt Fork
of Red River or Plasks Project on Prairie Dog Town Fork or on Groesbeck
Creek appears not to have opportunities great enough to even approach
eoonomic feasibility at this time. As economic conditions change, these
projects will be re-studied and recommendations will be made according to
conditicns existing at that time.

46
