.

.

Conclusion2

Development of the above-described project would be very expensive
and as the possibility of other water uses, such as municipal supplies and
flood control are limited, irrigation water users could not hope to pay for
construction costs under present economic conditions. Annual operation and
maintenance costs alone would be very expensive.

Plaska Project

General

Plaska Project is on Prairie Dog Town Fork of Red River in Hall
County, Texas. Storage would be provided on Mulberry Creek for the irriga-
tion of project lands in the vicinity of Plaska. Some recreational and fish
and wildlife propagation benefits could be realized from project development.

Proiect Work~

The project would consist of a dam and reservoir on Mulberry Creek,
about 25 miles of gravity flow main canal, and laterals and drains for
approximately 2,000 acres of irrigable lands.

The dam would be located about one mile upstream from the bridge
on State Highway No. 256. It would be a rolled earth-fill structure of
approximately 8,500 feet in crest length and some 70 feet above stream bed.
Embankment would total about 2,800,000 cubic yards.

Capacity of the reservoir is
an elevation 60 feet above stream bod.
probably be no more than sufficient to

estimated to be 100,000 acre-feet at
Runoff, together with storage, would
irrigate in excess of 2,000 acres.

The main canal would be about 25 miles long from the reservoir to
the project lands. It would divert on the left bank of Mulberry Creek and
continue along the left bank of Prairie Dog Town Fork to the irrigable
lands. The initial capacity of the canal would be about 50 cubic feet per
second.

Only inspection surveys have been made of irrigable lands; however,
the area of suitable lands exceeds the available ~ater supply.

,

Quality of Nater

Recently completed studies of data compiled through cooperation of
the State of Texas, the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Reclamation
indicate waters of Prairie Dog Town Fork unsuitable for either municipal or
irrigation use. Waters of Mulberry Creek are unsuited for municipal Use but
would probably be satisfactoIJ' for irrigation use.

Local Interest

There has been considerable interest shown by local people in the
possibility of developing n multiple purpose project on Prairie Dog Town

~
