.

.

The entire plan is described in detail in House Document No. 678, 81st
Congress, 2d Session, and is presented with an economic analyst.s.

RED RI\ER BASIN ABOVE !ENISON RESERVOm

McKnight Project

General
--

The possibility of developing storage on Salt Fork River in the
vicini ty of the Donley-Collingsl"orth County line for irrigation and other
uses has beon given consideration. Serving of the potential project lands
would have to be by pumping as they are uplands lying between Quail and
Wellington approximately 130 fGGt "bove the river. Quality of water, while
probably not suitablo for municipal purposes, would be suitable for irrigation

Phvsical Features

The project would consist of a dam and reservoir, a pumping pl~nt,
about seven ~iles of pressure pipe line and about 20 miles of lined main
canal.

The dam would bG a rolled, earth-fill structurG loc3ted just
upstre3m from the Donley-Collingsworth County line. It \1Duld control approxi-
mately 940 square miles of drainage area.

A pumping plant of about 50 cfs capacity with about 7 miles of
concrete pressure pipe line would be required to pump water to the Cflllal
lending to the project lands.

Approximately 20 miles of lined main canal would be required for
serving the area.

Project lands consisting of 3000-4000 acres lie northwest of
Wellington along the ridge tovJard a point about half way between Wellington
and Quail. The so11s are fine sands and loanw fine sands and would require
a high duty of water. Because of the coarse texture and porous naturA of
these soils, the lands are of limited irrigation utility, some being suit-
able only for sprinkler irrigation.

Quali~Qf Water

Spot sampling of creeks and tributaries which enter Salt Fork River
. above tho location of the dam indicated stored waters would be of satisfactory
quality for'irrigation use.

Log,al Inte~

A degree of looal interest toward project development has been
shown by citizens of Donley County ~ho have expressed a desire to the State
of Texas to cooperate in a program of investigations.

40
