In 1986, Mexico's pumping from its San Luis Mesa well field within five miles
(eight kilometers) of the boundary near San Luis amounted to 10,789 acre-feet
(13,308,000 cubic meters). The following quantities were pumped in calendar
years 1975 through 1986.
In 1986, as in the previous three years, Mexico's pumping of groundwater was
reduced because flood control releases from the dams in the U.S. resulted in
ample waters into the river to enable gravity diversions by Mexico to serve
its needs.
The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has completed 21 of 35 wells on the US
side within five miles of the Arizona-Sonora boundary near San Luis for
protective and regulatory pumping and 18 of the 21 wells were pumped in 1986.
The remaining 14 wells have been deferred until water supply needs make
construction necessary.

The United States pumped from domestic, municipal, and irrigation wells
located within five miles of the boundary near San Luis the following
The Commission is continuing, under Minute No. 242, its program for exchange
of groundwater data for the major groundwater baa ins lying partly in the
United States and partly in Mexico including the Colorado River delta area.
The objective of the exchange is to make available hydrologic, geologic and
water quality data in either country, to both Sections of the Commission to
enable evaluation of international ground water baains conditions.
* Data to be supplied later.
