pipelines where this preference was expressed by the landowner, water
measuring devices, and subsurface drains identified as needed improve-
ments during field inventories.

It is assumed, for this alternative, that 80 percent of the management
practices will be implemented and 80 percent of the needed measures will
be installed.

Non-Irrigated Upland - This plan recommends grazing management practices
the same as plan number one. The physical measures, in addition to
pasture planting and fencing, include range seeding, brush management,
grazingland mechanical treatment such as contour furrowing, pitting, or
chiseling by mechanical means to reduce runoff, water spreading over
relatively flat areas to enhance vegetative growth.

This plan may be considered as a more intensive level of improvement
recommended for sal inity control. Implementation of this plan will
reduce salt loading to the Colorado River by 58 percent at a one-time
installation cost of $23,471,000 for improvements on private land.

Plan No. 3

Irrigated land - This plan recommends changing from present on-farm
practices to different methods of irrigation such as drip and sprinkler
where appropriate. These methods will not be applicable in all cases
and, therefore, consideration also is given to the type of improvements
recommended under Plan Two. Improvements recommended by this plan, that
are different from Plan Two, consist of converting 1,300 acres to drip
irrigation, 1,900 acres to sprinkler irrigation. Unit cost for ditch
lining under this plan includes a cost for install ing some devices for
automatic time control of irrigation water. The total length of ditches
to be lined reflects the fact that drip and some sprinkler irrigation
systems will be suited to water conveyance different from lined ditches.

For this plan it was again assumed that 80 percent of the management
practices will be implemented and 80 percent of the needed measures will
be installed.

Non-Irrigated Upland - This plan recommends more extensive treatment for
the non-irrigated upland area to maintain maximum vegetative cover In
the watersheds. Seeding on critically eroding areas and physical
measures the same as plan number two will further reduce runoff and
sedimentation.

,~~
l

39
