<br />Plan No. I <br /> <br />Irrigated land - This plan recommends adjusting the time of set used for <br />each irrigation where needed and adjusting the number of irrigations <br />applied throughout the season. The recommended time of set gives a net <br />application more closely comparable to the design application recom- <br />mended for the crop and the soil conditions. The recommended number of <br />irrigations will assure application of sufficient water throughout the <br />season for crop growth. In addition, this plan recommends ditch lining <br />limited to the field supply and head ditches with devices to measure the <br />size of streamflow being del ivered to the field. land leveling recom- <br />mended in the plan is limited to those fields where water management is <br />most difficult to achieve because of severe irregularities in the ground <br />surface. <br /> <br />Under this plan the net application requirement for each irrigation is <br />1 ikely to be exceeded by a small margin because time of set by 6-hour <br />increments is the primary management practice change recommended. The <br />number of irrigations, each with a specified net application, will also <br />be a recommended management change on most fields. It is assumed for <br />this alternative that 80 percent of the management practices will be <br />implemented and 80 percent of the needed measures will be installed. <br /> <br />Non-Irrigated Upland - This plan recommends four management practices <br />needed for grazing control. Deferred grazing suggests selectivity in <br />the time when grazing is permitted. Proper grazing use suggests <br />limiting the duration of grazing and the number of animals to retain <br />sufficient vegetative cover and to protect against runoff and erosion. <br />Planned grazing systems are needed to coordinate grazing between all <br />sites under one ranch unit. In the more critical areas grazing should <br />be limited to the dormant season and should leave half of the vegetative <br />growth as a minimum cover. The critically eroding areas should be <br />seeded and fenced to exclude grazing. <br /> <br />This plan, considered as a minimum level of improvement for sal inity <br />control, will reduce salt loading to the Colorado River by 49 percent at <br />a one-time installation cost of $16,547,000 for improvements on privately <br />owned land. <br /> <br />Plan No. 2 <br /> <br />Irrigated land - This plan recommends changing the time of set and the <br />flow rate to meet the recommended net application as closely as possible. <br />The recommended number of irrigations will assure application of suffi- <br />cient water throughout the season for crop growth.
