Alternatives

1, Reasonable alternatives

During the course of planning studies, several alternatives to the

proposed project plan were formulated and analyzed. As the needs for water

supplies become more definit~, several of the alternatives were eliminated

due to lack of justification or support. The proposed plan is felt to

represent the best combination of features to satisfy those needs which did

show full economic, environmental, and techncial justification.

. Alternatives to the Dallas Creek Project Plan are summarized briefly

below:

Several alternative reservoir sites were examined for the Ridgway

Reservoir site. One site, the Cow Creek Dam axis, was particularly

attractive, but some environmental impacts would have been more severe

and enhancements to recreation and fish and wildlife would have been

reduced.

An alternative plan to serve about 730 acres of full service land

west of the existing Uncompahgre Project was examined, but was not included

due to lack of economic justification and local support.

As an alternative to constructing major storage programs of water

conservation on presently irrigated lands and water augmentation through

"

'i

weather modification were considered. These alternatives were found to

"

be incomplete in that they could not solve the critical problem of pro-

viding a regulated water supply at the time and place where the needs

exist.
