This was a result of the closing of a large
army hospital which was being served with water in
1945. The data on population served in Santa Fe
does not show a cottesponding dwp in 1946 due to
the fact that information on the number of military
personnel is not available.

Santa Fe is now serving apprqximately 3,100 acre-
feet of water to about 28,000 people.

WATER REQUIREMENTS PER ACRE

The data on water requirements for cities is usu-
ally resolved into and expressed in terms of gallons
per capita per day or million gallons per day of total
water used. Data on water for agricultural purposes
is usually expressed in terms of acre-feet per acre
per year. As a result of these different systems and
different bases for expressing data, direct compar-
isons of the water requirements for municipalities
and the requirements for agricultural purposes are
seldom available.
The following data is presented so that the gen-
eral relationship between municipal water require-
ments and agricultural water requirements, both
expressed on an area basis, may be more generally
understood.
Table No. 2 shows the average water require-
ments in terms of acre-feet per acre of area served
for the cities of EI Paso, Phoenix, Albuquerque, and

Santa Fe. This data is averaged for the entire area
served since the requirement per acre varies consid-
erably between the densely populated areas of the
cities to the outlying undeveloped areas. This
variation in water requirements per acre is illus-
trated on Plate No.4, which shows by contours, the
variation in intensity of water requirements for the
Phoenix, Arizona, area served in 1950..
It will be noted that the average for the entire
area is 2.0 acre-feet per acre per year with a max-
imum requirement of 5 acre-feet per acre par year.
The average requirements va'ry from year to year
as a result of partially developed areas being bfOught
into the served area; however, over a period of years
these factors are averaged, and the results show a
faidy uniform pattem or trend.
In the, case of EI Paso, over the period of years
from 1920 to 1950, the average quantity of water
required for the area served, including undeveloped
areas, varied from 1.0 to 1.2 acre-feet per acre per
year.
Dudng the period from 1940 to 1950 the require-
ments of Phoenix, Arizona, varied from 1.9 to 2.5
acre-feet per year. In 1954 this requirement dfOpped
to 1.1 acre..feet per year as a result of substantial
expansion of the area served into less densely pop-
ulated areas. Prior to 1950 the area served in
Phoenix was limited to the more densely populated
areas, resulting in a higher requirement per acre.

Table 2.
