is about normal and average for the existing condi..
tions. Both cities have dry climates, require irriga..
tioo of lawns and shrubs, use air conditioning, have
varied industry, and have military installations.

TOTAL REQUIREMENTS OF WATER

The first and most pfOnounced factm in total water
requirement of a city is availability. When water is
available the next most important factor is the number
of people served with domestic water.
With per ca pita water requirements varying as
previously described, the total quantity. for residen..
tial use will follow closely with population.
Other special uses affect the total water required.
Military establishments and industdal installations
may cause sudden changes up or down in the total
requirements.

Losses of water can and often do materially affect
the total quantity of water required to be pwduced.
Losses occur by leakage in transmission mains,
distribution storage reservoirs, and distribution mains
and pipes. These losses sometimes run as high as
50 percent in a poorly constructed and maintained
system, but in most well-operated systems the loss
is less than 10 percent and often as low as 5 per-
cent. This low percentage of loss is possible be-

cause of the fact that a domestic water system is
entirely closed. In contrast, the transmission losses
of the Salt River Valley Water Users Association,
Phoenix, Arizona, have recently been lowered from
39 percent to 3S percent as a result of an extensive
reconstruction program.
Curves which show the gfOwth and trend of pop-
ulation served with domestic water in El Paso,
Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Santa Fe,
New Mexico, are plotted on Plate No.2.
Other curves which show the gwwth and trend of
total water requirements for El Paso, Albuquerque,
and Santa Fe are plotted on Plate No.3.
The above data are also shown in tabular form in
Table No. 1.
The population served with domestic water in both
El Paso and Albuquerque has gwwn rapidly in the
past ten years, and both are now at about 160,000
people served. The increased total water require-
ments of each of these cities followed closely with
population gfOwth, and at present each city uses
approximately 26,000 acre-feet of water per year.
The population served with water in Santa Fe also
increased in the past ten years, -but not at the rapid
rate of either Albuquerque Of El Paso. In the case
of Santa Fe, it will be noticed on Plate No.3 that
there was a definite drop in water requirements in
