O~~lhose for fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci. The river

currently meets the A2 bacterial standards. There are no bacterial

~.

standards whatsoever under the BZ classification.

According to .the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation

(Memo of June 10, 1976), monthly bacterial analyses have been performed

~

at Jackson Lake for the past 4 years. As was indicated above, these

waters are diverted from the South Platte River immediately upstream

from the Narrows Reservoir site. These data, according to the Division

of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, show that the only time that the

criteria limiting body contact were approached was when there were

.......

drowned livestock in the inlet canal. The bacterial standards have

'.

not been exceeded over the period of record.

-

Colorado is currently revising its stream classifications and water

quality standards. Although it is early in the process and the system

that will ultimately be implemented is not known for certain, the

-

system currently proposed is very similar to that of Nebraska. In

I'
l
.
r.
,
r

Nebraska there are no streams that are classified for primary contact

recreation, while all of the mainstem reservoirs are classified as

being suitable.

Reservoirs have an inherent ability to remove suspended
.

,
i

mater~al, including bactcria. Although bacterial levels in the inflow

to the proposed Narrows Reservoir have not been excessive, the reservoir

would further remove those that are present, reducing the possibility

_.

9

Ir--
. ,
. .

, \
j
l
