,

GaGl

can create a safety hazard for swimmers and water skiers. Rooted

aquatics are limited to shallow areas where light can penetrate to

the bottom to allow growth fOllowing germination, i.e., the littoral

zone. Problems of this nature have been experienceu in reservoirs

that maintain a relatively constant water level.

Narrows Reservoir will fluctuate annually. Storage will occur in the

spring at the time of germination, with subsequent drawdown occurring

over the remainder of the growing season. Since rooted aquatics are

sessile, they will alternately be in deep water and/or later be exposed

to air. This is evident at nearby Jackson Lake, which receives waters

diverted from the South Platte River and contains similar soils in its

benthic zone. No excessive growths of either emergent or submergent

rooted aquatics have occurred because of water level fluctuations.

Areas with rooted aquatics would be propagated for waterfowl production.

These would be in the shallow upper end of the reservoir.

No boating

or swimming would be permitted in these areas.

Existing water quality data for the river reach included in the reservoir

area were retrieved from the STORE! file maintained by the Environmental

.>

Protection Agency (EPA). Review of these data .showed that bacterial

levels in that river reach were within the criteria required to permit

primary contact recreation.
