The drainage basin is 230 square miles.

Records are available for the period of May 1926 to September 1929, April

1940 to September 1945, October 1950 to September 1954, and January 1982

through 1984. The accuracy of streamflow records is considered to be good

except for the winter months, which are poor. The flow mainly consists of

return flows from irrigated lands of the Montezuma lJ:Tigation District, with

water imported from the Dolores River basin.

McE1mo Creek below Cortez

The gage is located downstream of Sand Canyon and about 12 miles west

of Cortez. The drainage area is about 283 square miles. Records are available

for the period of October 1972 through September 1983. Records are considered

to be good except for winter months, which are fair. The flow consists mainly

of irrigation return flows from Dolores River diversions. Diversions above the

gaging station are made by the Rock Creek Ditch for in-igation of about 650

acres below the station.

McEImo Creek near Colorado-Utah State Line

The gage is located 1.5 miles upstream of the Colorado-Utah state line

and about two miles upstream from the confluence with Yellowjacket Creek.

The drainage area is about 346 square miles. Records are available for the

period of 1951 through 1984. The accuracy of streamflow records is considered

to be good. Most of the flow of McElmo Creek is contributed by return flows

from irrigated lands of the Montezuma lJ:Tigation District, with water imported

from the Dolores River basin.

Summaries of gage records are presented in Appendix A of this report.

-4-

~ ,,~-~-'-'
