Progress shows 1,181 feet of tunnel drilled to March 1. <br /> <br />or 8 percent complete. <br /> <br />Twin Lakes where the construction of the Mt. Elbert <br /> <br />Pumped-Storage Powerplant on the north shore (to the right) ill <br /> <br />about to get underway. Right-of-way is now beingpurchaud. <br /> <br />Here we have depicted the location of the powerplant. the <br /> <br />penstock and forebay. The system will incorporate pumped-back <br /> <br />storage. One unit of 100 megawatts generating capacity will be <br /> <br />installed initially with provision for a second unit to be added at a <br /> <br />later date. The specifications are now being prepare'd for the <br /> <br />powerplant structure and a contract ill expected to be awarded <br /> <br />this fiscal year. <br /> <br />Environmental needs have been given special treatment. The <br /> <br />structure has been designed architecturally to blend into the area~ <br /> <br />The penstocks will be buried. The switchyard will be screened in <br /> <br />back of the forebay and out of the public view. Transformers will <br /> <br />be obscured and conductors buried. A visitor center is planned <br /> <br />jointly with the Forest Service. <br /> <br />4 <br />
