;~'

It

from state of California
flAI~ for Second Quarter of 1959 J;i

<f~ At recent hearings before the pUblic works sub-
committees of the House and Senate Committees on Appro-
priations, the State of California requested $56,857,000
for advance planning and construction of 23 active Corps
of Engineers flood control projects in the State, including
$1,000.000 for investigations and surveys. The total ,
requested is $9,760,000 more than the amount included in
the President's budget, and includes provision for three
new construction starts.

.

~
it
,

Quarterly Report to
Southwest Inter-Agency

~~~~::~~
Committee
"
,
.
~~ 1'\1CVlo1oiP'~'
'j ..-.
;:
,
r
t
,
.".
'$
The Stat~ also requested $51,339,026, or the
same amount as included in the budget, for the construction,
operation, maintenance, and planning of Bureau of Reolamation
~rojects in the State. In addition, the appropriation of
$7.362,500 and $21,914,270 for loans under Public Laws 130
and 984, respectively, was requested. This would provide
funds for the implementation of two Public Law 130 projects.
and nine Public Law 984 projects when they become eligible.
Since the initiation of the program in 1954,
thirty-eight applications for assistance under Public
Law 566 have been accepted by the California State Soil
Conservation Commission. Of these. the Commission and
the Soil Conservation Service Administrator have approved
18 and 16, respectively, for planning. Final work plans
have been completed for six, and four have been authorized
for construction, The Commission recently adopted a set
of criteria to guide it in approving proposed projects.
with a view to limiting their size and character in line
with recommendations of the Soil Conservation Service
Administrator relative to the scope and purposes of the
Public Law 566 program. Adherence to these criteria
should further the construction of worthwhile projects
in California under the law.
i:
<I,
v,
,~
',' ~ ~
~/;) 1r,/
1~~~
~~. ~~
.
