<br />.r.., . <br />..,.....:::.;.: <br /> <br />3827 <br /> <br />CHAPTER 2 <br /> <br />OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California delivers <br />Colorado River water to its 25 constituent member agencies in <br />wholesa]e quantities through 430 miles of District pipe lines, <br />tunnels and canals, These member agencies then distribute and re- <br />tnil the water through their own facilities to the ultimate consumer, <br />There are 311 miles of pipe lines originating at Lake Mathews and <br />varying in size from 152 inches in diameter to 24 inches, and 19 <br />miles of tunnels of from 120 inches to 72 inches in diameter, The <br />District's portions of the two San Diego Aqueducts consists of 66,6 <br />miles of 96-inch to 48-inch diameter pipe and 0,9 miles of 72-inch <br />diameter tunnel on Aqueduct No, 1 and 18,6 miles of 75-inch dia- <br />meter pipe line and 15,0 miles of canals and box siphons on Aqne- <br />duct No, 2, <br /> <br />Since the beginning of the work in 1951-52 on the expansion l)ro- <br />gram 216 miles of distribution lines have been constructed and <br />placed in service, <br /> <br />Distribution System <br /> <br />It was explained in Chapter 1 that the Colorado River Aqueduct <br />System consisted of a Main Aqueduct and a Distribution System. <br />The distribution system is divided into two separate operating di- <br />visions, namely; the portion served from Lake Mathews and the <br />portion served by the three lines of the two San Diego Aqueducts, <br />which connect to the Main Aqueduct west of the San Jacinto TunneL <br /> <br />There are two main distribution lines originating at the head- <br />work at Lake Mathews, the Upper Feeder and the Lower Feeder, <br /> <br />Upper Feeder <br /> <br />The Upper Feeder extends 61 miles from Lake Mathews to the <br />Eagle Rock Control Tower on the westerly boundary of the City of <br />Pasadena, The line varies from 152 to 116 inches in diameter, with <br />a designed capacity of 750 cubic feet per second, to the F, E. Wey- <br />IT,outh Softening and Filtration Plant at La Verne, and a capacity <br />of 510 cubic feet per second west of La Verne, Unsofteneo \Vater is <br />cielivered from the Upper Feeder east of La Verne to March Air <br />Force Base, Western Municipal Water District of Riverside County, <br />Chino Basin Municipa] Water District of San Bernardino County. <br />and Pomona Valley Municipal Water District of Los Angeles <br />County, Softened and filtered \Vater is furnished by five feeder lines <br />from the Upper Feeder to member agencies in Los Ange]es and <br />Orange Counties. lying southerly and westerly of the La Verne <br /> <br />:!5 <br />
