S. . Geological Survey will conduct a '
'Flood Insurance Study of two ar.:as in. Co10rado--the unincorporated are.a
...'dfJef.f~i:son County and the community of Palmer Lake.

Tl\is.study is being funded by the Federal Insurance Administration.(FIA)
," 'qftl\e U. S. Department of Housing .and Urban Development under authority
. of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968, as amended (P.L. 90-448),
'i 1'jnd the Flood Dis.aster Protection Act of 1973 (P.L. 93-234),

,ThE! purpose of this study is to examine and eva1ua~e the flood hazard
,.ilreasin the communities which ar"",deve1oped or which are likely to be
!,qeveli:Jped and to determine flood eievations for those areas. Flood
'<jlevations will be used by local community officials to carry out
.theflood-plain management objectives of the National Flood Insurance
'Program. They will also be used as the basis for determining the
appropriate flood insurance premium rat.:s applicable for new buildings
..and their. contents, as well as detennining the rates to be used for the
,'second layer of. insurance on existing buildings and. contents.

In Jefferson County about 336 miles of stream channels will be studied
by approximate or detailed methods. Approximate flood plain boundaries
. of the 100-year flood will be delineat.ed on topographic maps for 200 miles
,of channels through the use of readily available information on past
; floods and field reconnaissance. These maps, which will show approxi-
:. mate flo.od-hazard areas, will be sufficient for FIA' s "emergency flood
'insurance program," but will be inadequate for local use in adopting
. land-use controls in flood plain areas.

(Conttnued)
