A table showing the extent of this program in the Missouri
River Basin appears in the accompanying tables.

fu>ricultural and Economic Aspects of Water and Related Land
Resources Research

..

The Agricultural Research Service conducts research aimed at
finding better w~s of storing and saving water, better w~s of
getting it from one place to another and better w~s of using it.
'fhere is available, a listing of publications pertinent to water
and related land resource research that can be obtained by con-
tacting the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research
Service, Washington, D. C.

To improve management and treatment of forests and wild lands
the Forest Service does research in forest, range, and watershed
management and protection. Various studies and research activities
in water and related land resources include: studies in evapotrans-
piration in forest and grasslands; snow management; snOW accumulation
and snow runoff in the high mountains; shelterbelts; land treatment
for erosion control and soil stability; reproduction in forest stands;
cooperation with state foresters schools and state universities and
agricultural colleges; and maintain inventory of present and potential
growth of the Nation's forest resources.

The Economic Research Service makes studies and recommendations
on the economic aspects of resource conservation development and
utilization.

ERS develops the agricultural
basin studies and program planning.
projected needs for food and fiber
programs will meet these needs.

economic framework re~uired for
This includes estimates on the
and the extent to which alternate

Analyses are made on the cost and benefits of conservation and
development measures. These provide the basis for determining
economic feasibility to guide the planning of land treatment, flood
control, irrigation, drainage, water supply, etc.

ERS also evaluates the economic impact of the agricultural as-
pects of water and related land resource developments as part of the
Type I Missouri River Basin Study and Type IV Studies being conducted
for state basins and parts of basins within states and for state
water plans under the leadership of USDA Field Advisory Committee.

f.D
(Q
C'1
, (t)
