- 3 -

both publicly and investor-owned electric utilities. The basic information
utilized in these studies is sssembled primarily from reports filed with the
Federal Power Commission by the vsrious electric systems. There are approx-
imately 830 utilities reporting to the Chicago Regional Office annually and,
in addition, about 410 more which report at five-year intervals. Approxi-
mately 560 of these utilities are located in the Missouri Basin.

The Federal Power Commission is the only agency of the Federal Government
authorized by law to collect information on all aspects of the electric
power industry throughout the United States, including complete details on
generating plants, transmission lines, operating characteristics, intercon-
nections, costs, etc. The Commission is, therefore, in a unique position
to provide information on power planning for the benefit of other agencies
of the Federal Government, for the Congress, and the public. In order for
hydroelectric projects to be planned for economical integration into re-
gional power systems, this information must be utilized fully. Furthermore,
the basic data provided by this service are an aid to management in assur-
ing the full utilization of all power resources in the interest of both
national defense and the peacetime economy of the Nation.

The forecasts of future electric power requirements by Federal Power Com-
mission power supply areas were reviewed and finalized in fiscal year 1968
in connection with the revision and updating of the Commission's National
Power Survey published in 1964.

Programming - Fiscal Years 1972 and 1973

According to current budget eatimates, the Chicago Regional Office of the
Federal Power Commission will expend ahout $80,000 during esch of the fis-
cal years 1972 and 1973 for work in connection with the Missouri River
Basin development program. These estimates sre, of course, subject to ad-
jUBtment in the light of actual appropriations to the Commission.

The Federal Power Conmission staff will continue to uake studies for the
purpose of recommending appropriate power insta1lationa at Federal hydro-
electric power projects in the Missouri River Baain. Revisions of data
on existing snd scheduled generating capacity, particularly with reference
to non-Federal electric utility planning, will be reported to the Inter-
Agency Committee. Also, estimates of future power requirements will be
made annually and additional studies will be made, if and when neceasary,
to determine poasible "in-service" dates for any proposed new Federal
hydroelectric capacity.

In addition to the activities listed above, specific work in which the
en Chicago Regional Office ia currently engaged or contemplates the need for
~ during fiscal years 1972 and 1973 include the following:
C\l
~ a. Participation in work on the MBIAC Subcommittee on Comprehensive
Baain Planning.

b. Continued cooperation with the Corps of Engineers and the other
interested Federal and State agenciea in the preparation of the
annual operating plan for MiBsouri River main stem reservoirs.
