~~~
,~
(\!
.. ..-j
a composite rotation for the 1977 cropping pattern of Saguach County
,\)
, .,
',...,.,<
(primary center pivot area of the valley) consisting of 67% malt barley,
7% feed barley and 26% potatoes on center pivot systems, the net returns
to land risk and management per quarter section acre in 1977 budgeted
at about $44.00/acre for conventionally irrigating the corners, '$46.001
acre for establishing permanent cover, $60.00 for idle corners and $63.00
for using a "corner" system.
Two conversations encoun,tered during a visit to the valley by the
author exemplify both the concern of local growers and visitors to the
area. While the author sat down for lunch during his first day of the
visit, the first words heard were one grower asking another, "What in
the (expletive deleted) are you going to do with your corners?" Later
on during the visit the author overheard a visitor to the area (remarking
about the dust problem) state: "t met the valley over Canon City,
Colorado at 20,000 feet altitude." Hopefully, the following pages will
shed some light on these kind of problems and statements.
- 3 -
