While,
1
page} more profit can

as demonstrated in the budgets (see appendix 2,

be made on a quarter section unit leaving corners idle than farming

with conventional surface irrigation; this latter practice exposes

more soil to wind erosion and noxious weed control problems.

Another alternative is to use the relatively newly developed "corner"

system which trails an extended boom guided by a wire around most of the

corner areas (loses about one acre per corner). In the budgets, this system

generally showed greater profit per quarter section, but requires some

higher capital and risk, and as with conventionally irrigating the corners,

leaves the corners open during the generally windy season between tillage

and planting. It also fails to utilize river water to enhance groundwater

recharge.
A final alternative is to establish and maintain a permanent cover

in the comers to inhibit wind erosion and noxious weeds as well as es-

tab1ish a permanent wildlife cover. The budgets generally indicate that

this practice gives higher net return per quarter section than conventionally

surface irrigating the corners but less than "idle" corners or the use of

the "comer" system. The problem is that there is a substantia1.labor

and water cost to establish and maintain permanent cover in the comers

considering no dollar return. Yet, the Ad,.m~~~h the ASCS set aside

program will o?ver only a portion of the seeding cost which is minor

compared to the irrigation costs.

Looking at the budget comparisons (appendix 1) and considering

'" 2 -
