, And when it arrives regions which have been desert since the first waters
drained off the surface of the world will grow and thrive and produce prodigious
quantities of the things men need to live by, and there will be no need to worry
over how much water will come down tomorrow, because it will come from the
sea and the sea is without limit. A pipe dream, maybe, but if so, an Eastern
firm is spending 6 million dollars on the 'Baja Peninsula of Southern California
on the Gulf side for nothing. That, in addition to the pilot plants on East and
West Coasts through which the government is now seeking to attain industries
by producing water at a price comparable to today's costs -- or better.

*******

ENERGY
Blair Burwell, President
Minerals Engineering Corporation
Grand Junction, Colorado

Atomic energy has aroused an unparalleled public interest and has
been more widely discussed than any other event of the past fifteen years. Un-
fortunately, this interest has been the re,sult of its dramatic disclosure in the
form of the atomic bomb and the world-wide weapons race which has followed.

The true significance of the event has, therefore, been obscured by
the fear and secrecy of its first introduction and has been exaggerated and dis-
torted by forecasts of impossible wonders to come.

The discovery of the use of the energy of the atom was the result of
a long series of related discoveries, each one of which has profoundly shaped
and stimulated the development of mankind and the growth of civilization. All
of these have been concerned with energy in one form or another. They have
been the result of the restless curiosity of man to explore and understand his
world and his enviroment.

It can be noted also that these discoveries of man were first used
for war or conquest and later became the necessities of peace and progress.
The weapons of one generation tend to become the tools of the next.

In history of man there has been no period of progress to equal the
past twenty years. The use of power or 'energy has been expanded in new
machines and devices for better transportation, communications and comforts
of living. Medical progress has developed new safeguards against disease and
increased life expectancy. Progress in chemistry has created new abundance
of food and better things for living. A new source of energy has been found
in the structure of the atom.

Energy sources have become the wealth of the world, and the know-
ledge to use it, the key to the treasure.

- 6 -
