Udall teday anneunced that <br />the Department ef the Interier has made its basic decisiens cencerning <br />censtructien ef transmissien lines fer the five-State Celerade River <br />sterage preject. <br />The plan achieves the Kennedy administratien geals ef: (1) Maxi- <br />mum savings fer the Upper Celerade Sterage Basin fund (which will <br />finance all majer dams and participating reclamatien prejects in the <br />bllsin); (2) full pretectien ef the service rights ef preference cnstemers <br />Ill. the lewest pessible ""tea; and (3) stregthening ef the Federal system <br />threugh intercennectiens with facilities ef private pewer cempanies, <br />Anneuncement ef the phtll was made pessible by cempletien ef <br />ne!(etiatiens leading te a!(reements with feuI' ef the five majer private <br />utilities in the Celerade Basin area (these in Celerade, New Mexice, <br />Utah, and Wyemin!(), An agreement was net reached with the <br />Arizena Public Servicc Ce" but an intercennectien still is under <br />nc!(etiatien. <br />Acceptance ef the utilities' prepesals, SecretaI',\' Udall said, will <br />mean a $27 milliQn reductien in the Federal investment fer the trans- <br />missien grid and will add $77 millien tQ the preject's basin fund by <br />I,he year 2042, when the 87-year payeut periI'd is cempleted, <br />Secretary Udall peinted eut that ne!(etiatiens with the cempanies <br />were carried eut in accer(l with an understanding reached with cen- <br />gressienal Apprepriatiens Cemmittees last year when $13,673,000 <br />WllS apprepriated fer the Bureau ef Reclamatien tQ undertake planning <br />and initial censtructien ef a Federal system.
