The major portion of the Riverside Irrigation Group
is located along the Lower Virgin River about 12 miles upstream of
Lake Mead. The group consists of four cooperators. Total agri-
cultural area is 1,224 acres, but only 394 acres are being irrigated
at present. Irrigation is normally conducted during all months of the
year.

Three cooperators use the Riverside diversion structure on the
Virgin River as a source of their irrigation water. This structure is
located about 1-1/4 miles upstream of the Riverside bridge on State
Route 91-A, and diverts water south of the river channel. One
cooperator pumps water from the ri ver and i rri gates north of the
channel. The pump lift is about 10 feet.

The main ditch of 9,240 feet long is unlined. Water is available
twice weekly during critical summer months only when sediment is
flushed from the upstream Mesquite diversion structure.

Attempts to construct a permanent diversion structure across the
river channel have met with failure, apparently due to the lack of a
continuously firm foundation at the site, and the resulting erosion of
the river during floods. The earthen structure now being used must be
repaired or rebuilt after each minor floodflow.

10
