.

PART III--HYDROLOGY

General

The reconnaissance hydrology studies indicate that the
proposed plan wouJ.d develop a new water supply for both irri-
gation and municipal and industrial use. The new irrigation
supply, as measured at the farm headgate, 'WouJ.d average 15,200
acre-feet annually, of which only 12,000 acre-feet was considered
salable for reasons to be discussed later. The ne1f irrigation
supply 'WouJ.d be assigned to individual farms and ditches which . if
experience a shorter water supply than the area. average. The wl",~ d.....4 ,v
nffif water supply available for municipal and industrial use ~., ;-"-'/ . ' ' /,
Ej.vera.ges 16.0200 acre-feet annually. The combined peaking capacity -7"",,/ P 'J,
of the two powerplants wouJ.d be 274,000 1!Jil and the average energy
production wouJ.d be 186, 500,000 KWH annually.

.

The Cache la Poudre River, the largest tributary of the
South Platte River, drains an area of approximately 1,900 square
miles in the States of Colorado and Wyoming. The in-basin water
supply is augmented by a number of transbasin diversions,
including the Colorado-Big Thompson Project.

Ap~oximately 242,000 acres of land are irrigated in the
basin. Y They are served by about 30 major canal and reservoir
systerls which are privately mmed and operated.

Wi thin the Cache la Poudre drainage basin are 75 or more
privately owned reservoirs. With respect to storage capacity
they range in size from a fffif acre-feet to nearly 20,000. Their
aggregate storage rights total more than 200,000 acre-feet.
About one-third of the reservoirs are located in the mountains
and about two-thirds in the plains, the latter being the irrigated
portion of the basin. The principal existing irrigation features
including U.S.B.R. installations of the Colorado-Big Thompson
Project are shown in Exhibit 2.

The cities of Fort Collins, Greeley, and several smaller
municipalities obtain their water supply from the surface waters
of the Cache la Poudre River. Most of these municipal supplies
have been acquired through purchase of irrigation water rights and
facilities.

Of the total water allotments of the Colorado-Big Thompson
Project, about one-half are held by water users within the

Y South Platte Basin Report, USBR, Region 7, 1959

.

II
