The 1~70 federal eensus reported a population of 507 persons <br />within the town boundary. The lS75 estimated population was 620 people. <br />The municir-al water district currently serves ap~roximately 330 people <br />outside of the town boundary. The Delta County Planning Department has <br />estimated Hotchkiss' lSS3 population for three [.otential growth patterns <br />as follows: <br /> <br />2,000 <br /> <br />High <br />3,500 <br /> <br />LIlw <br />1,000 <br /> <br />Eedium <br /> <br />The consultant has chosen to design Phase I and II improvements <br />for a po~ulatien which lies between the low and medium projections. <br />vfuile irrigated agriculture has always been and probably will con- <br />tinue to be the major industry of Delta County, coal production has long <br />been a major enterprise within the county. Tremendous coal reserves <br />exist in the northern and eastern parts of the county. ~arious major <br />coal ~roducing com~anies have already acquired or are in the r-rocess of <br />acquiring the ownershi~ of or leases on coal-bearing lands.
