000527

Demonstration of Best Management Practices (BMPs)
to Improve Crop Yields, Returns and Water Quality in the
Arkansas River Valley of Colorado
Phase II

Progress Report
November, 1999

Of the four observation wells located near the Holly Drain Ditch east of Holly, one sluffed and
filled in the well and will have to be cleaned or replaced for the 2000 season, Water level
measurements were started in February, 1999 and are shown in the enclosed charts # I, 2, 3 and
4, The water table in the Schenck Well dropped substantially as the ditch was cleaned during the
week of 6/1-6/15 even with the Arkansas running at above normal levels, Then the table rose for
a short time during the last week in July and has had a slight decline since then unti!11/2/99, The
Frey Well showed a decline during June through the last week in July but since then has shown a
rise and, as of 11/29/99, is higher that it was in 2/23/99, The Wagner Well has been variable
throughout the season rising and lowering with river and irrigation events, The remaining three
observation well will be monitored weekly or as possible through the remainder of 1999 and in
2000 with measurements to be taken from the Mapes Well when conditions allow,

Cory Thompson completed harvest of his corn PAM demonstration October 12, Yields were
taken from areas as follows: Untreated - PAM treated - PAM treated - Untreated, Each of the
areas were approximately 3,75 acres in size and similar areas were harvested in each of the four
areas, The Untreated areas averaged 185 bushels per acre with a harvest moisture of 18,3%
compared to the PAM treated areas that averaged 190 bushels per acre with a harvest moisture of
17,9%, (See attached Cultural Practices) These results indicate that the com in the PAM treated
area maintained a higher level ofsoi! moisture during critical periods of water use, reducing stress
and accelerating maturity, which produced the higher yields at lower harvest moisture

At the November Board meeting of the Northeast Prowers SCD, the Board indicated a desire to
help sponsor an Irrigation Management Workshop in conjunction with the District's annual
meeting, The Workshop would be held sometime during the last week of February/first of March,
The CWCB demonstration work would be reported and other subjects would include new crops,
salinity studies in the Otero County area, range management, weather station information, drip
irrigation and dryland/limited irrigation crop production, Potential speakers would include: Jim
Valliant-CSU, Tim Gates-CSU, Luis Garcia-CSU, Harold Duke-USDNARS, Tim Steffens-CSU,
Duane Johnson-CSU, Kevin Larson-CSU, Mike Bartolo-CSU, Howard Schwartz-CSU and
person on ColoradolKansas case or some other area of water interest. (Minutes of the November
10 Board meeting are included)

News letters will be sent out in January asking for persons interested in the cost/share subsurface
drainage funding, The NRCS has a list of interested persons from EQUIP programs in 1998/1999
and new names may be added to this list. Target date for the installation of the subsurfuce
drainage systems has been tentatively set as May 31,

CWCBHPRI1.99
