GGCsa'1

less tolerant crops being grown in the area and, in many cases,

corn yields are being reduced 20 to 30% by the high salt levels.
"We are going to have a tour on Thursday, July 22, 1999, to

look at some demonstrations of Best Management Practices (BMPs)

to reduce the effect of salinity on crop yields. The tour will

feature surface drainage, drag hoses on a center pivot, the use

of PAM and surge irrigation", Valliant said. "The tour will

begin at 8 am , starting at the Gateway Park on Highway 50 near

the center of Holly between 6th and 7th and end about noon with a

free lunch."

The group will look at the surface drainage work done on the

Holly Drain, east of Holly, then travel to the Paul Frank farm,

l/2 mile west of the intersection of County Road LL and Road 33

where Paul is irrigating alfalfa with a center pivot using ditch

water. Working with Jim Valliant, Paul is comparing drag hoses

on 5 foot spacing to the more traditional drop hoses with

sprinklers. Paul will be at the pivot all morning to show

interested people how his center pivot system is set up.

The use of different forms of PAM as a method to reduce

erosion and increase irrigation effectiveness will be discussed

at one of Cory Thompson's corn fields at County Road MM and Road

26. From there the group will go to the Bub McGee farm to look

at a surge irrigation demonstration on forage sorghum.

Returning to the Gateway Park for lunch about noon, the

group will hear Dr. Tim Gates, CSU Civil Engineering, discuss

results of a salinity study he is doing in the Rocky Ford/La
Junta area.
