Th. Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

.l.: 1508

Pl'esident's Repol't

To The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company
TO THE OillECTORS ANIl STOCKHOLDERS:

After an open dry winter irrigation water was needed and used freely
when released April 1. This was a good water year, a supply was available
at all times from John Martin Reservoir.

Our winter wheat and aUalfa had to be irrigated and much of the row
cropland needed i.rrigation before planting. We were fortunate to have a
carryover supply.

According to the new capacity table put into effect April 1 there
was in storage at that time 185,838 a.f.

Releases were started immediately for both Colorado and Kansas.
From April 1 to October 31, 277,730 a.l. was released from John Martin,
197,000 ai. was used in Colorado and 182,400 aJ. crossed the state line.
Ka\'\saf. ditches diverted 143.686 a.f. and 47,000 a.f. passed by Garden
Cit.y, Kansas. 35,800 al. of which was in June and July, much oC this time
Kansas was not calling for water.

Inflow into John Martin Reservoir during the winter storage season
was only 14,410 a.f. and from April 1 to October 31, 103,490 aJ. Inflow
lrom the Arkansas Cor the year amounted to only 31,500 ale but the Pur-
gatoire contributed 86,190 a.f.

Heavy rains in the McClave, Wiley and Big Bend area on Ma,r 31
caused great damage to roads and bridges in Bent and prowers Counties.
When this flood reached the Amity Canal" water Crom the overflow section
at Wiley Drain flooded Highway 50 and the farms below. Later the canal
broke near the Country Club. A channel to the river is needed for this Oood
water. The Vista Del Rio drainage can not carry such a flood. It will re-
quire a bridge at Highway 50 and the cooperation of land owners and public
officials in securing right of way. More in regard to this project later.

Alter the extremely dry winter ever.)1hing had to be irrigated which
caused heavy releases from John Martin Dam during April and May but
rains late in May and earl.r June relieved the dema.1d. Releases Cor Colo-
rado averaged only 130 c.Ls. during June and Kansas went for 50 days
in June and July without asking lor water from the Reservoir. Release of
water for Colorado in June was only 7732 a.f. Inflow into the Reservoir
during same period was 36,670 a1. Colorado releases (or July were
23.832 a.f.

Drainage of the irrigated land north and west of Lamar is b,r drain
ditches constructed down the natural draw. These terminate usually at
the Amity canal. Over the years they have become enlarged and conduct
any rain rapidly to our canal. Farms below the canal have been leveled
and original channels to the river erased.

Page 3
