.

.

Paradox Valley Unit

This report was assembled to provide current information on the Paradox Valley

Unit. It is assumed the reader has previous knowledge of the project.

Information on project history is available on request.

Deep Well Injection Disposal

Brine collection well field testing in 1980 indicated that pumping

approximately 2 cfs (900 gpm) would control the anticipated 180,000 tons of

salt annually entering the Dolores River. This significant reduction in

pumping rate from the initially projected 5 cfs prompted a re-ana1ysis of deep

well injection disposal. This re-analysis showed injection to be more cost

effective, more locally acceptable, and to impact the environment less than the

evaporation pond disposal recommended in the Definite Plan Report and

Environmental Impact Statement approved in 1979.

Williams Brothers Engineering Company was awarded a contract on January 1981 to

provide an engineering investigation, feasibility study, and facility design of

deep well brine disposal in Paradox Valley. They were selected for the

architect-engineer contract from 18 potential consultants because of their

prior experience with deep well disposal projects. Phase I of the study was

completed in April 1981. This phase confirmed deep well disposal as a

technically and economically feasible disposal method. Phase II, design of a

deep well system was initiated and a draft report published in December 1981.

This report along with technical drawings and specifications was reviewed by

the Upper Colorado Region and E&R Center technical staff. Numerous comments

and revisions were added to the draft report and a final series of reports were

00(537

_~-_,-";::r:-~'_~11';'_~!:::~::~-'>:",;'""':::":7-::_<.'1;~,:::~;:;.'::>!'..., ,,_w,_~o:-, ~'. -~~.:""~.: ...s.-~L~<';:~J.l.~~~W::-:"""~~:<'~~o':"":'.."-.:;'~_:':'L-:-P;~-~:;~.'7_~J'::;,'T.~"~-".:'7...:.,,,,~'~;:-t:.".;l'%i~~,~_:;,.,t;~'.!L'.-.'nX.'_:"""'':'''-Y;~:,;:!":(1:"'~~~""",~~"'"'"' ,,,,,'.-,,,-S-;.
