One such opportunity arose in ~ht

fall of 1982, and it said, "Let's make better use of our littl~

computer." We acknowledged that a highly desirable use of our

computer ~ould be to do away with laboriously tedious and error-"

prone analyses of river call data. Thus, we then began to "put

the river call data on the computer." This really means that y.:

decided to create a data file to contain divisional call records

and further, that we decided to create specialized, yet general-:

application, software to expedite our analyses of call records.

The remainder of the discussion in this appendix, therefore,

deals with the creation of a computerized, call data file and th,~

developmertt of useful software for analysis of call data.

II. CREA;ION OF THE DATA FILE

The ,uestion of how to create the data file may sound

mundane, but this subject has an important bearing in the organi~

zation and flexibility of the software programs to follow. But

first, perhaPS it is wise to discuss "call data" as a generic

term and to describe briefly some of the types of analyses and

interpretations which relate to call data.

What's a CaLL and What's a CaLL Reeo~d?

Form~l call data are kept by the Division Engineers for
Water Division I (South Platte River Basin) and for Water
Division crI (Arkansas River Basin). Such data exist from 1941 ~o
present for Division I, and from 1967 to present for Division I~.
In each c~se, these records represent the controlling divisional
A-l

1, ,1,'1
't,

i!

',~;

',:;
it
,~~

j'

:~I
;'1
'.'1
"

;'
