Existing flood control projects. <br /> <br />(1) Tuttle Creek Reservoir. The dam of this multiple-pur_ <br />pose project Is located on the Big Blue River about 12 miles upstream <br />frc:tl its mouth. The project C0:1t=015 the drainage frem 9.556 square <br />miles, or core than 99 percent of the Bib Blue RIV€r basin. The flood <br />plains of the Big Blue River beloW' the dam are co~pletely protected <br />from Big Blue River floods by this project, and ~a~sas River bac~water <br />flooding In this area is or will be minimized by other existing and <br />authorized projects in the Kansas River basin. The Tuttle Cree:- <br />project, a key unit of the Kansas River flood control p~ogram, was <br />cedicated in June 1963. <br /> <br />(2) Scu,:,rd, ::cbrLl'::>!~a.. 10c.:11 p:-otcction project. The local <br />protection project at Seward, Nebraska. cons~sts of levees and .:l chn!lnel <br />cutoff. This project, co~pleted in 1953, protects ma~or developments 1n <br />the city from recurring floods on Lincoln Creek and on the Big Blue River. <br /> <br />(3) Nanhattan, Kansas. The Uanl-tattan 1.0<:.11 protection proj- <br />ect, which is designed primarily to protect ~he city irem Kansas River <br />floods, includes a tieback levee extending along the right bank of the <br />Big Blue River. 'l'he project 1"'.15 placed in operation fe 1964. <br /> <br />(4) Frankfort, :~ansas. The Frankfort local protection proj- <br />ect, completed in 1963. is designed to protect t~e City iron floods on <br />the Black Veroillion River and Timber Creek. 7:1e Black Vernill10n Ri.....er <br />is a left bank tributary joining the Big Blt;c River \<:ithin the Tuttle <br />Creek Reservoir. The project includes levees. c~annel realine~e~ts and <br />improvements, replace~ent of one railroad bridge and alte=ation of anoth~~. <br />raising of railroad tracks, and sidehill cutoff diversion ciitches. <br /> <br />b. This project was developed under <br />the continuing authority provided in Section 205 of the 1948 Flood Control <br />Act, as amended.
