<br />ARMY ENGINEERS ANNOUNCE SCHEDULE OF PUBLIC HEARINGS ON REVISED
<br />REGULATION TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY FROM HARMFUL DISCHARGE
<br />OF DREDGED OR FILL MATERIAL
<br />
<br />Citizens and representatives of interested groups are invited to commont
<br />
<br />and suggest changes in a recently approved Corps of Engineers regulation designed
<br />
<br />to protect the quality of waters of the United States against harmful discharge
<br />
<br />of dredged or fill material. A series of four regional hearings will be conducted
<br />
<br />this month by a team from the Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, DC,
<br />
<br />headed by Brigadier General K. E. McIntyre, Deputy Director of Civil Works. Two
<br />
<br />hearing sessions will be held at each of four locations around the country, and
<br />
<br />will include officials from the Environmental Protection Agency.
<br />
<br />The regulation, published July 25, and out for public conunent for 90 days,
<br />
<br />implements Section 404 of Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control
<br />
<br />Act Amendments of 1972. Environmentalists have urged protection. for the rapidly
<br />
<br />disappearing productive wetlands of the nation through a permit system for major
<br />
<br />disruptive activities.
<br />
<br />Widely separated locations for these public hearings have been selected to
<br />
<br />give the public greater opportunity to appear and participate and provide for
<br />
<br />..
